10. Rammstein - “Mann Gegen Man"
This German hard-core metal/hard rock all-guy band really did a flip on this video. The title means "Man Against man" and trust me there's a whole lot of men (all butt naked, oiled and muscular) in this video.
9. Electric Six - "Gay Bar"
The title says it all (1863 in Washington DC and a gay bar?)
8. The Village People - "Y.M.C.A."
Oh so classic - c'mon every gay/straight man loves this one! Hearing this song in the 70's I was clueless - in retrospect they really made it possible for bands to express their style and not be afraid.
7. Wham! - "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"
Seeing George Michael in those tight girly-shorts, pink sweater and yellow gloves - c'mon how could we not have known. And Andrew Ridgely also looks great in those tight yellow shorts that shows for a fraction of a second his package.
6. Madonna - "Vogue"
The Queen and her boys making the cuties all vogue on the dancefloor.
5. Queen - "I Want to Break Free"
I always wondered what Freddie Mercury was trying to say in this song - was it a cry for his homosexual nature to shine through (well that was already done in his stage outfits); is it a cry for people to be who they are and not care what anyone thinks? Looking at this video, I am thinking he wants to break free and become a house-wife?
4. Bronski Beat - "Small Town Boy"
So classic - Jimmy Sommervile and Bronski Beat really from the start were not hiding who they were....they were gay, they sang about gay themes, and with an album detailing the "Age of Consent" of homosexuality in many countries - there is no doubt about this band's orientation.
Looking at this video I thought it was way ahead of it's time. I mean Holly Johnson walking into a pig-leather bar and this being the setting for a music video? No wonder it was banned in the US and UK.
2. Sigur Ros - “Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa”
I posted this video as a taster to this countdown a few weeks ago. If there is any video you should look at - look at this one. Trust me - it was make you tear-up.
1. Olivia Newton John - "Physical"
Why did I choose this for #1? Well back in 1981, with a pop-superstar like Olivia Newton-John making a video about hot muscular guys holding hands at the end; guys in speedos, muscular/oiled bodies everywhere - I was sold back in 1981. Granted this video is not "overtly" gay, but the subtle suggestions behind it, gave it a nice twist.
Anyways peeps - TTYL!
SO TRUE! LOL!
ReplyDeleteVery good list. Here are a couple that I would throw your way as honorable mentions... Kylie (all my lovers)
ReplyDeleteMadonna (Justify my love)
Cazwell (Meet me at the ice cream truck)
My list could easily continue but I'll stop there.
Oh I love Freddie Mercury! I swear, if I could go back in time and pork one person, I'd choose him. TMI?
ReplyDeleteSteve, I think the reason I came out to myself aside from the bodybuilder magazines of the 60s was her video for "Physical." It's so homoerotic, and fit the type of body that was attractive then. I knew something was different in me and this video just brought it out.
ReplyDeleteSo gay? One hundred per cent.
Hello TGK - it's a hard list, can't believe the one that topped it is a woman singing about getting "Physical".
ReplyDeleteHi Rob - I was trying to toss up "Justify My Love" v. "Vogue". Justify has those homo-erotic images of Madonna's then bf with other guys, and of course Madonna is tongue-kissing a hot Italian model (some girl on girl action). But I went with "Vogue" simply because it can get those boys on the dance floor to strut their thing following the images from the video.
Oh - I also thought about Kylie and Cazwell - but it was a tough list!
Larry O - That is not TMI - I hear you. For me it would be....ummmm...George Michael?
Hello Ivan - wow - thanks for sharing that - I am sure glad you did. When I saw that video back in 1981 I had no idea about what the ending meant - I was naive and clueless. But to have that in a major pop song 30 years ago? That was risk that paid off! Thanks!
I would add only one more (though it's probably before your time) Billy Squiers "Rock Me Tonight"!
ReplyDeleteHi rob - so true - this video broke Billy's career. I mean a hard core rocker trying to dance and also dressing like that - so lame.
ReplyDeletegreat choices
ReplyDeleteThanks WM!
ReplyDeleteI would agree with all of these. Especially Physical.
ReplyDeleteYeah MoM - thanks. I'm glad you like my #1.
