It's weird but I'm in a coffee house writing this post and across from me is this guy I used to date and be intimate with...but anyways I digress...
Queen were a phenomenal rock band, lead by an an amazing and talented group of guys - Freddie Mercury is well-respected in music and is one of my favourite rock singers (along with Robert Plant) and Brian May is also regarded as one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time - and of course John Deacon and Roger Taylor to complete the circle.
I remember me and my siblings and cousins rocking out to "A Night At The Opera" and belting out "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the top of our voice and word for word. My sister also had this really cool electric blue rock-tee of Queen's "A Night at the Opera" which later I got (loved it).
Back in 2004, I had the privilege of seeing in London "We Will Rock You" - a play set to the music of Queen and composed by Brian May and Roger Taylor (of Queen). The couple next to me were from New York, and they commented that this play was in the Top 5 they've seen.
The play was so awesome - I don't know why it never opened on Broadway - it would sure sell out. It's colourful, funny, great story (about a world where rock n' roll is lost/forgotten) and full of great choreography - and of course it's all set the music of Queen. I just remembered - the main female lead was named "Britney Spears" after some obscure female artist they read about - so funny!
Anywho - here's my favorite Top 10 from Queen:
10. Under Pressure (w/David Bowie)
Performed live at Wembly - 1986. Please take a listen to Freddie's amazing love on this one!
9. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Queen at Live Aid - check it out!
8. Somebody to Love
Version by George Michael + Queen (gotta love George on this one).
7. Killer Queen
Mazz Murray (star in the play "We Will Rock You") as Killer Queen in The Weakest Link!
6. Bicycle Race
This song was based on a race where the cyclists were all in the nude. The album actually had a very provocative poster inside of a bunch of naked women with knee high socks and their boobs and arses all bare. I was really young then and this did leave an impression on me. So love this song and the idea of cycling naked!
5. Fat Bottom Girls
I believe this song was also inspired by that famous "Bicycle Race" with those naked chicks bare on the saddle...
4. I Want to Break Free
I kinda like this one, because I am thinking Freddie is crying out as to what he is.....See a link to the pick of the "Gayest Music Videos of all Time".
3. You're My Best Friend
This video is funny - a cute girl singing this classic on ukulele.
2. We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions
Oh yeah - live at Wembly in 1986! Plus it's such a classic sport anthem!
1. Bohemian Rhapsody
Classic - re-made in Wayne's World - just the bestest!
Anyway peeps - TTYL!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or maybe I'm the only one who has this issue...but I can't play the clips you imbed because that music competes with the imbedded music in your blog. Is there a way to turn off the background music and listen to the clips?
ReplyDeleteHi Behmark - yes. If you scroll down the right side of my blog you'll see an iPOD - just click on the stop button as you would on a normal iPOD and the background music would stop! Thanks - I did not think about that!
ReplyDeleteunder pressure is one of my faves
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out Steve! Fantastic post. I wish I would have been at Wembly back in 1986 to see that performance. And I loved George Michael too. He's a perfect fit for Queen. I wonder if they ever consider that.
ReplyDeleteWM - love it too! That bassline - so cool!
ReplyDeleteLarryO - my pleasure. Looking at that footage from 1986 made me realise that Freddie Mercury was probably one of the best performers ever! They just don't make 'em like that anymore!
