The emergence of a little album called "Appetite For Destruction" was out and seemed to be bubbling under on the Top 200 album charts and seemed to be going nowhere. I found the album name and the name of the band "Guns N' Roses" quite cool and I had no idea what this album was about....but I wanted it - it was as if the urge to get this was part of my inner rock n' roll faith calling.
My cousin was visiting from Canada and I asked her to get this album for me.....not even knowing what this band sounded like. Well, it came in classic LP Vinyl format (now vintage these days), and once the needle hit the groove to the album's 1st track "Welcome to the Jungle" I was sold at the sound.
I also heard "Sweet Child O' Mine" which was the 3rd track of Side 2 of the album and I did think that that was the best song....and boy did it break records. It spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 in 1988, and the album became the biggest selling album in the US by a debut artist - 18 times platinum....and whom was the previous holder ? my boys from Boston - BOSTON in 1976 (I'm sad to this fact since Boston's album is one of my faves and "More Than a Feeling" is my fave rock song of all time)
I knew they were Heavy Metal, and later on with the likes of MTV and magazines like Hit Parader and Rolling Stone (when RS was a proper music magazine) I read it was part of the "Sleaze Metal" regime. I immediately loved that genre....Sleaze Metal.....I mean I was young and rocking and I dressed the hard rock scene, even though I had a military crew cut look....I was a rocker inside.

Woo hoo!! Welcome to the Jungle still brings me to my feet. And I've had a crush on Slash forever.
ReplyDeleteRock on Larry - same for me as well! I had a crush on Steve Adleer b/c of that gorgeous nipple ring and hairy chest ummmm! - the 80's!
ReplyDeleteI was a huge fan as well! I completely loved them and had the posters and everything!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this, I was flooded with memories! I remember getting that Guns & Roses cd the day it came out. I have always been a big music lover and have all those cd's you mentioned! It was during that time period that cd's were phasing out cassettes and LP's. Now I have so many cds, they are stored away, but I get them out occasionally and still play them. Unfortunately I lost all my albums, which included the Boston one. Lucky for me, we had a Capitol/EMI records factory in my town and they had "delete sales" to the locals, and I bought so many cd's for $3 and under. I bought way to many over the years, but that shows my love of music.
ReplyDeleteNik - I had the posters as well - gosh - what awesome memories!
ReplyDeleteJohn - welcome - I have the Appetite and Lies on Vinyl and never got them on CD - it's been a while since I've played them, but I have their greatest hits (on CD) but it's not the same!
I do have that Boston on both LP and CD - now that's a great album!
Well, as you might imagine Steve, Metal isn't really my thing, but I do love Aerosmith. When Stan and I were first together he couldn't believe that I liked them. I had to show him my CD's. I'm not sure what makes them different from the rest for me.
ReplyDeleteHi there Kyle - I think Aerosmith has stood the test of time - Steven Tyler is a great singer and they also have great stage presence.
